If you have not lost you ID card in a robbery then you might not understand what I am about to say. Almost all business transactions you carry out with banks, government agencies or telecommunication organizations, you are expected to show some form of Identification. Hence, you must carry your identification cards on your person wherever you go. Also to be easily identified in any case of an accident, one carries their ID with them. Your best bet is to put it in your wallet to make it easy for you to have your ID always.

 The wallet as you see is an interesting artifact for criminals (pickpockets and arm robbers). It is their source of income as it is your haven for keeping you valuables. It is this conflict of interest that I find intriguing.
