Who said Ghanaians 'can talk'?

There is a popular statement in Ghana that quotes “Ghanaians can talk.” Though half of that is true, the other half is just off the point. When it comes to reporting what affects Ghanaians, you would be disappointed. I am personally frustrated as a student journalist going on field assignment to get people to respond to my interviews.
You would be amazed by how many people who turn down the offer to be interviewed on issues that directly affects them. I can say some are timid even coward (used with extreme caution). Many Ghanaians are bold to discuss issues over with friend or over some few bottles of drinks but would decline to speak to the camera or a mere recorder o f a journalist. That, I feel, is personally frustrating. They rather blame journalists for not truthfully covering all sides of a story – that is just double standards. This development stifles the efforts of women advocates who constantly push for women representation in the media, media content, panel discussions or political discourse.
A lot of people are just busy managing the worse of their lives rather that speak up to it. Many politicians chance in on these attitudes of this selective silence from Ghanaians to make up political images of them. Politicians are left to discuss all topics including science topic, technology issues, women issues and other unspeakable issue they know nothing about. The expert of those issues rather listens by their radio or sits by their T.V. set challenging the guest speaker, on top of their voice. If only the radio were voice receivers, their voices might be heard but for now we only have to trust the journalist to make their concerns known.
Finally, before I rest my convulsive rant, the public servant, government agencies and the government itself is no different. It is particularly difficult to get public servant to respond to you. First you write a letter, then book appointment and there are occasions where you would have to pay to speak with your elected representative.
In a nut shell, information has a serious challenge in the Ghanaian society and the notion that Ghanaians can talk needs to be reversed. True, Ghanaians can talk but most of them say NOTHING.
